First Meeting of the Working Group Tasked with Preparing the Dossier for Regional Organizations Seeking Membership in the Joint Committee (JCRB)

On Monday, March 3, 2025, the Arab Organization for Industrial Development, Standardization and Mining held the first meeting of the working group assigned to prepare the dossier outlining the requirements for regional organizations seeking membership in the Joint Committee of the Regional Metrology Organizations and the BIPM (JCRB).

The meeting was attended by representatives from the following Arab countries: the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the Kingdom of Morocco, in addition to representatives from the Gulf Metrology Association and the Secretariat of the Arab Metrology Initiative (ARAMET).

The discussions focused on the preparation of the dossier detailing the requirements for regional organizations applying for JCRB membership, as well as the main and sub-sections of the planned website project for the Arab Metrology Initiative. The participants also emphasized the importance of ensuring that ARAMET fulfills all necessary requirements to be eligible for JCRB membership ahead of the upcoming JCRB meeting, scheduled to take place in September 2025 in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Conclusion of the Training Course on Calibration of Electrical Measuring Devices (High Voltage)

The training course on “Calibration of Electrical Measuring Devices (High Voltage)” concluded on Thursday, February 20, 2025, in Cairo. The course was organized by the Arab Metrology Initiative (ARAMET), affiliated with the Arab Organization for Industrial Development, Standardization and Mining, and was held over two days, Wednesday and Thursday, February 19–20, 2025, graciously hosted by the National Institute for Standards (NIS) in the Arab Republic of Egypt.

The course brought together participants from several Arab countries, including the Republic of Tunisia, the Republic of Sudan, the Republic of Iraq, the Lebanese Republic, the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the State of Libya. It was facilitated by a distinguished group of experts from the National Institute for Standards, recognized for their excellence in this field.

The program included theoretical lectures and interactive practical sessions, offering in-depth explanations on the fundamentals of electrical measurements, high voltage measurement techniques, the devices used, electrical safety protocols, and best practices for handling high voltage systems safely. The course also covered the latest technologies and international standards relevant to the field.

The event was marked by active participation and constructive dialogue between trainers and participants, which significantly contributed to knowledge enrichment and the exchange of expertise in this vital area.

The Fifth Meeting of the Executive Committee for Scientific and Industrial Metrology

The Arab Industrial Development, Standardization and Mining Organization (AIDSM) held the fifth meeting of the Executive Committee for Scientific and Industrial Metrology of the Arab Metrology Association (ARAMET) via videoconference on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, under the chairmanship of the Arab Republic of Egypt. The meeting was attended by committee members representing the following Arab countries: the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Republic of Tunisia, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Sudan, and the State of Palestine. The meeting reviewed the measures taken to follow up on the implementation of the recommendations of the fourth meeting of the committee. The heads of the technical committees also presented the outcomes of the meetings of the technical committees for scientific and industrial metrology held in the last quarter of 2024.

The meeting agenda also included a discussion of the special work plan for scientific and industrial metrology for the period 2024-2028, which focuses on several projects, including building the capacity of members, exchanging information and expertise, raising community awareness of the importance of metrology, raising the level of measurement capabilities in Arab countries, and strengthening partnerships with relevant parties. The outcomes of the meeting of the Joint Committee of Regional Metrology Organizations and the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (JCRB) were also discussed, along with the requirements for joining the committee, in addition to the advanced stages achieved by the Arab Metrology Association to meet the requirements for international recognition.

The Arab Industrial Development, Standardization and Mining Organization (AIDSO) held a training course on Calibration of Medical Thermometers via videoconference on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. The course was facilitated by Dr. Khaled Ali Mohammed, an expert at the National Institute for Standardization in the Arab Republic of Egypt.

The meeting was attended by 47 participants from the following Arab countries: the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, the Republic of Tunisia, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Syrian Arab Republic, the Republic of Sudan, the Republic of Iraq, the Sultanate of Oman, the State of Palestine, the State of Qatar, the State of Kuwait, the Republic of Lebanon, the State of Libya, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Kingdom of Morocco, and the Republic of Yemen.

During the training course, a presentation was given on “Calibration of Medical Thermometers.” The presentation reviewed the various techniques for measuring body temperature, including the use of various medical thermometers, explaining their advantages and disadvantages, and the factors affecting measurement accuracy, such as environmental conditions and method of use.

The course also addressed how to use an electronic thermometer, explaining the correct steps for measuring temperature and accurately documenting readings. Emphasis was placed on the importance of maintaining device stability and using calibration tools such as black bodies and ovens to achieve accurate readings.

The training course featured an interactive discussion on methods for calibrating medical thermometers in accordance with international specifications, while reviewing best practices for improving performance and ensuring quality in the use of these devices in various healthcare sectors.
